Ponte do Abade - Sernancelhe

The Abade Bridge is already more than halfway along the stage linking Trancoso to Sernancelhe, but it marks the beginning of the municipality of Sernancelhe and, consequently, the border with Portugal’s Northern Region. Upon reaching the bridge, walkers will find the first waymarker of the Torres Way. After crossing the Távora River, turn left at the first junction, heading towards the local sports field. Continue uphill for approximately 6 km along unpaved roads and through a dense, ancient chestnut grove, located midway between the village of Mosteiro and the and the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de ao Pé da Cruz. The new National Road 229 is crossed via an underground passage along an unpaved track, and the entrance into Sernancelhe is made by following Rua do Colégio uphill. The destination is the Parish Church of Sernancelhe, an emblematic monument of the Torres Way, as its main façade features what may well be the oldest sculptural representation of the Apostle Saint James in Portuguese territory.
Upon reaching Avenida das Tílias, turn left and then immediately take the first right onto Rua do Penedo. At the end of this street, turn right again onto Rua do Forno and, via Rua Dr. Ribeiro Saraiva, enter Praça da República, where the Parish Church, the Father Cândido Museum and the Torres Way information panel are located.
