Moimenta da Beira - Ucanha

This stage is divided into distinct sections, each offering pilgrims a different experience. Prepare for a long journey of constant ascents and descents, the first of three particularly demanding stages. The route is uphill all the way to the boundary of the municipality of Moimenta da Beira, so a stop in the village of Sarzedo is recommended. This is followed by an isolated and rugged stretch, sometimes almost wild, winding through pine forests and dense shrubs that seem to threaten to block the way.
There are kilometres of solitude before reaching Granja Nova, but from there, everything changes. The descent towards Ucanha is breathtaking, following an ancient route lined with high stone walls and extensive apple orchards. In the village, the River Varosa is crossed via a medieval bridge featuring a toll tower, a symbol of the taxes once levied on goods entering the territory of the neighbouring Monastery of Salzedas. It is one of the most striking monuments along the Torres Way and will certainly leave a lasting impression.
