The gateway to Lamego, Bigorne, is also the exit for another route. Arriving in Lamego means you're in the Alto Douro Wine Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, and deserves a longer pit stop to take a deep breath and visit some of its many monuments, without forgetting the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. If your legs can take it, it's well worth climbing the 686 steps of its baroque staircase.
