Coming from Golegã and past Quinta da Cardiga, following a path along the River Tagus, you arrive at Pedregoso, in the municipality of Vila Nova da Barquinha, where the territory of Centro, or Central Portugal, begins.

Continue through Atalaia where you will find the Main Church, one of the most important Renaissance buildings in the country.

In Asseiceira, a town that was marked by an important battle in the Liberal Wars, the Ruins of the Hospital de Sangue and the parish church are worth highlighting.

Upon arrival in Tomar, take the opportunity to rest next to the Chapel of S. Lourenço and the monument to D. João I, bordered by the River Nabão.

The city of Tomar is very closely linked to the Templars and the Order of Christ, which succeeded them.

Climb up to the magnificent Convent of Christ and the walls that make up Tomar Castle, entering through the Porta de Santiago. Contemplate Charola, a place where, by papal decision, from 1443 onwards, all pilgrims visiting on Saint James’ Day (25 July) would be granted plenary indulgence for their sins.

Take the opportunity to visit the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, a benchmark in Portuguese Gothic art, where the famous D. Gualdim Pais was buried in 1195. Another place that should not be missed is the Tomar Synagogue.

This stage of the route ends at the beautiful Church of São João Batista (St John the Baptist).
