Jewish Presence Memorial House - Castelo Branco

Paying tribute to the Jewish community of Castelo Branco.

The Jewish Presence Memorial House tells us the story of a community that contributed a lot to the development of the city in the Middle Ages and in Modern Age, its memories and legacy.

The visit starts with the Torah, the most important element for a Jewish community. Followed by the history of the Jewish community of Castelo Branco, its Jewish quarters, respective characteristics and answers to questions that for centuries remained unclear.

In the transition between the two floors, you will come across the Memorial to the Victims of the Inquisition, 329 cases that have been identified and studied, where 21 fatalities have been identified during the Inquisition in Castelo Branco.

The first floor is a space entirely dedicated to Jewish figures of Castelo Branco: Amato Lusitano, Maria Gomes, Afonso de Paiva, Elias and Moisés Montalto and Manoel Joaquim Henriques de Paiva.

The Memorial House also exposes a set of objects associated with the Jewish rituals and festivities.
