Municipal Museum of Aljezur

Located in a 19th-century building that used to house the Town Hall, the Municipal Museum of Aljezur has three distinct sections: archaeological, ethnographic and Islamic.

Given the importance that the Islamic presence had in the creation of the town of Aljezur and in its culture, the Museum dedicates a special exhibition space to it - the Andalusian Legacy Room, which includes collections from the Islamic period that have been collected in archaeological excavations carried out in various parts of the municipality.

Among the archaeological remains from the Islamic period we find mainly ceramics and metal artefacts, including an interesting set of ceramics exhumed during excavations at Aljezur Castle.

The exhibition is accompanied by information on the use of the pieces on display in daily life and their relationship with other elements of Islamic culture, and also has a guide with detailed information about the pieces, as well as a more comprehensive view of the Islamic presence in the territory.

The visit to the museum can be complemented with the Historic-Cultural and Environmental Circuit of the municipality of Aljezur, a pedestrian trail of about 5.5 km that covers the historical area of the town of Aljezur and surrounding area, outside the urban nucleus, and which has audio-guides to help interpret and guide the trail.
