The Torres Way takes its name from its most famous pilgrim, the Salamanca-born writer Diego de Torres Villarroel. It is a Jacobean route that follows ancient medieval roads linking Salamanca and the interior of Portugal to the western Iberian Peninsula and the coastal routes leading to Santiago de Compostela. A diverse route with a distinct identity, it is both challenging and fascinating. Those who embark on this adventure will face steep climbs, but will also pass through unexpected urban centres, breathtaking landscapes and encounter a remarkable heritage.
The route passes through four UNESCO World Heritage Sites and six cathedrals. Yet, sometimes its most important landmarks are the discreet traces of the ancient cult of Saint James, such as Portugal's oldest sculptural representation of the Apostle, displayed on the main façade of the parish church of Sernancelhe. And there is so much more to discover, from the monumental complex of São Gonçalo de Amarante – the legendary pilgrim who promoted the construction of a bridge over the River Tâmega for the benefit of travellers – to the Church and Fountain of Santiago in Braga, the medieval bridge of Ucanha or the fortress of Valença…The possibilities are rich and diverse... Dare to discover them!
